Essential oils are great for use in homemade soaps, shampoos, cleaners, detergents, deodorizers and more. Why not turn your everyday chores into an Aromatherapy session. Here are a couple of quick n’ easy home-made deodorizer recipes to freshen up the space around you.

Coming to know that there are harmful ingredients in many of the commercial household products on the store shelves, I couldn’t, in good conscience, continue to use and support them. I started making my own products and supporting smaller companies who stand by their natural, simple ingredients. I noticed improvement of my skin, moods and my budget.

Once the base ingredients are acquired, it only takes minutes to whip together your recipe. Having them on-hand makes these projects cheap, quick, natural, customizable and environmentally friendly.

Staple (Base) Ingredients to keep on hand:

  • Castile Soap
  • Baking Soda
  • Variety of Essential Oils of choice
  • Glass Containers

Tip: Washing Soda is used in many DIY recipes. It is simple to make. Take Baking Soda and bake it at 400-450F for a minimum of 1 hour. Stir half way through. Finished product will be a flatter grey color and a finer grainy texture. (I make a larger amount at once and store in a jar for later use. 6 cups has lasted over a year for me.)

Tip: Buying (and/or making) in bulk saves in the long run.

For a deodorizing spray:

  • Use a Glass Spray Jar (These are the ones that I use. I think 2 oz is a good size)
  • Fill to about 80% full with water
  • Add essential oil of choice – approx. 15-20 drops
  • Shake well and spray

For a relaxing, good night sleep simply spray the infused lavender oil on your pillows and sheets during your daily bed making routine. For a stuffy head spray eucalyptus or peppermint.

Improve the smell and mood of the house by spraying the curtains, couches or carpet. Use as a body mist.

For a deodorizing powder:

  • Baking Powder
  • 20-30 drops Lavender
  • Mix well and sprinkle on mattresses, carpet, vehicle seats, couches
  • Allow to sit for a couple hours
  • Vacuum up surface and enjoy!

Tip: Lavender works great for this recipe as it has anti-bacterial and germicidal properties. Add some peppermint for a unique aroma that has the same effect.
